Digital Topographic Maps

There are now several publishers who produce digital versions of federal government topographic maps - on CD-ROM, DVD or with an on-line subscription.

Each of these products may be used on a PC. Some require additional navigation software to interface routes and waypoints directly with a GPS Receiver. (The maps will not appear on the screen of the GPS.)

Digital Topographic Maps
Each of these products provide raster versions of a number of topographic maps, covering regions across Canada. "Raster" is a computer generated image that is a replica of the paper topographic map. Each CD contains basic map viewing features such as zoom, and displays latitude and longitude at the position of your cursor.

Should you wish to interface routes and waypoints with your GPS receiver, additional navigation software may be required.

All products contain 1:50,000 scale topographic maps, except where noted.

Navigation Software (to interface with GPS)

Please Note: the maps or charts will not appear on the screen of your GPS. These software programs enable the user to interface routes and waypoints between the GPS and the PC.

To interface Fugawi and Quo-Vadis CD-ROMs with a GPS Receiver requires additional navigational software. While features of individual products vary, in general navigation software offers the ability to do the following:
  • Upload and download waypoints, routes and tracks with most GPS receivers
  • Full navigational features including waypoints, routes, distance to go, course to steer, magnetic or true courses, speed, odometer, etc.
  • Current location and track shown on screen
