12 November 2002 The battle against acid rain was one of the most significant environmental initiatives of the late 20th century. However, the reductions in emissions and acid precipitation achieved in the first phase up to the year 200, and even those contemplated for the post-2000 phase, will not be sufficient to completely protect the most sensitive regions of North America from damage caused by acid rain. This paper reviews the first phase of acid rain programs in Canada and the United States, and describes the actions currently under way in the second phase. |

7 February 2003 The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) took place in Johannesburg, South Africa from 26 August to 4 September 2002, marking the tenth anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro. Whereas the Rio conference produced a number of high-level governmental conventions on the environment, the WSSD focused more on poverty reduction and the implementation of agreements through partnerships between government, civil society and industry. This paper discussed the WSSD and reactions to its outcomes, as well as Canada's implementation of sustainable development and the Rio conventions |

30 January 2009 From a political perspective, climate change caused by human activity is now almost universally accepted as an issue that demands urgent attention. The most important basis for action on climate change has been the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Although the Convention foresaw many partnerships and agreements as means towards its ultimate objective, the agreement that has garnered the most attention is the Kyoto Protocol, negotiated under the auspices of the UNFCCC. This paper describes the UNFCCC and the Protocol, emphasizing the Canadian context. |

23 November 2007 Since its inception in 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has acted, particularly through its Kyoto Protocol, as the focus of international efforts to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. Since then, a number of other international mechanisms to address climate change have been created, in particular the G8 Dialogue on Climate Change, Clean Energy and Sustainable Development, the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate, and the GLOBE G8+5 Climate Change Dialogue. This paper describes these efforts and their relationship to the United Nations process. |
Plastic Bags: Reducing Their Use Through Regulation and Other Initiatives |

Written by Sam Banks. Published by the Library of Parliament, 2008. Description: |
8 December 2008 Plastic shopping bags are among the most ubiquitous consumer items on the planet. While convenient for carrying groceries and other routine purchases, their sheer numbers are cause for concern. One organization suggests an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed each year. Canadians take home an estimated 55 million plastic bags per week, for a total of 2.86 billion per year. According to some sources, producing plastic bags uses less energy and water and generates less air pollution and solid waste than does manufacturing paper bags. Each plastic bag also takes up less space than a paper one in a landfill. However, many of these bags never make it to landfills; rather, they are discarded and become litter that has a damaging impact on ecosystems, habitats and wildlife. Growing awareness of and concern about the detrimental effects of plastic bags are driving efforts to reduce their use and thus prevalence in the environment. This paper discusses a number of different initiatives concerning plastic bags. |
