Language as Spoken Here:
The first and most important priority of anyone learning a foreign language must be oral comprehension. The Comprendre series immerses users in spoken French. Users will benefit from a structured approach, and will receive seven hours of recordings, enabling them to hear the language as it is spoken in Canada.
Sounds in Words, Sentences and Dialogue:
Comprendre 1 looks at the meaning of the message and examines sounds that affect this meaning. This module involves a three-step process: sounds in words, sounds in sentences and sounds in context. With the first group of activities, users become adept at identifying and distinguishing sounds. The next step is to identify words that are transformed by a liaison or an elision (e.g. mon avis sounds like "mon navis"; il becomes "i"). Finally, there will be short dialogues illustrating the concept of reformulation (e.g. "As-tu pris ce document pour faire ton travail?" "Oui, je l'ai utilisé.") which encourages users to take context into account when trying to figure out what the words mean. Each activity has two versions, with version B presenting a higher level of difficulty.
