This is an annual publication. The 2009 edition was released January 2009. The 2010 edition is expected to be released in January 2010.

Description:

Useful for practitioners and students, as well as immigration or refugee decision-makers, journalists, or researchers who must consult primary immigration law on a frequent basis, the Immigration Practitioner's Handbook is designed as a practical tool and should serve as a reference book for students enrolled in immigration consulting courses throughout Canada. It is also designed to assist immigration consultants in preparing for the Professional Standards Exam, which all current consultants must pass to become a member of the Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants (CSIC).

The 2009 edition includes the following new items: a practice paper on Overseas Humanitarian and Compassionate Applications with special emphasis on how to overcome R117 (9)(d) exclusions, an overview of the history of Canadian immigration law and policy and a summary of the new provisions for Skilled Workers.

The Immigration Practitioner's Handbook 2009contains secondary material in five categories:
  • Provincial Nominee Programs: An updated summary of all Provincial Nominee Programs, which places at your fingertips an accessible, condensed compilation of hundreds of web pages from twelve different websites, not available in any other desk top reference.
  • A history of Canadian Immigration law and policy covering all major developments from Confederation to the recent changes implemented with Bill C- 50.
  • IRPA Summaries – These provide coherent and accessible summaries of the legislative provisions concerning the federal business classes (entrepreneurs, investors and self-employed) and the refugee classes, useful as a refresher or for those new to the topic.
  • Practice Papers – Detailed commentary and comprehensive assistance for practitioners in two difficult subject areas: assessing criminal inadmissibility, and preparing overseas humanitarian and compassionate submissions in the context of the R117 (9)(d) exclusion from the family class.
  • Checklists – These provide quick and practical helpful lists for the busy practitioner in areas such as where to file a spousal case, the new Occupations list for Skilled Workers, etc.
