Gabriel Dumont: War Leader of the Métis

Buffalo hunter, Métis war leader and fugitive from prosecution after armed rebellion, Gabriel Dumont embodied the spirit of the West.

He emerged as a leader of his people during their most difficult time from nomadic followers of the buffalo to sedentary farmers among a growing population of eastern Canadian settlers.

The story of the great Métis general is told here within the sweeping drama of the changing tableau of the West:
  • Raised in the heyday of the mid-19th century buffalo hunts, Dumont becomes a crack shot and shows exceptional leadership at an early age.
  • Both compassionate and decisive, Gabriel develops his skills as a negotiator, peacemaker and even field doctor and veterinarian in the waning days of the buffalo.
  • With tireless resistance and brilliant military strategy, Dumont more than Louis Riel exacts a deadly toll on his eastern adversaries during the 1885 North-West Rebellion.
  • Dignified in defeat, he continues fighting for both Riel and his people during his self-imposed exile in the U.S.
