Description:

Brave Battalion presents the story of four Canadian Highland regiments that were banded together as the 16th Battalion during the First World War. Ninety years after the end of WWI, this work honours those soldiers and makes their stories a vivid reality.

Mark Zuehlke focuses on one particular battalion, the Canadian Scottish (Princess Mary's) Regiment, who suffered the worst loss of life and casualties among Canadian troops, and how the men bonded through their harrowing experience and came to represent the uniting and rising of a nation beginning to realize its potential. This Highland Regiment fought in the Ypres Salient and in the Somme, at Vimy and Amiens. It suffered the first gas attack; its ranks were decimated as it fought at virtually every major battle in the European theatre. In graphic detail Zuehlke takes the reader into the trenches and onto the shell-pocketed battlefields, through assaults on ridges and wooded valleys.

Brave Battalion is not a sweeping history of the conflict. It is rather the story of war on the ground as told through the accomplishments of a band of brothers—the Canadian Scottish—who came to represent the best of what Canada sent into battle.

Written for a general audience, and complemented by photographs taken on the battlefield, and helpful maps, this book will impress the reader with the scope and brutality of the war that was meant to end all wars.
