|On October 12, 2007 Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the
creation of an Independent Panel on Canadas Future Role in Afghanistan.

the Canadian mission in Afghanistan once its mandate ends in February
Five distinguished Canadians were appointed to the panel: John Manley, Canadas former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, who served as chair; Derek Burney, former Canadian Ambassador to the United States; Pamela Wallin, former Canadian Consul General in New York City; Paul Tellier, former clerk of the Privy Council; and the Honourable Jake Epp, former federal Cabinet Minister.
