Description:

The richly illustrated and accessible Kick the Fossil Fuel Habit provides a promise for a better tomorrow by showing how existing clean technologies can help save our world for future generations.

Most of us realize that climate change is a pressing issue, but we're not sure what to do about it. Author Tom Rand believes that the first step is for us to know what our options are, and that's why he wrote this book. Contrary to much contemporary discussion, Tom believes we do have the option to kick our fossil fuel habit altogether.

Each chapter discusses one of the 10 leading clean technologies and concludes with the "Trillion-Dollar Question," which explores the potential of each technology if we were to invest on that scale:
  • Solar
  • Wind
  • Geothermal
  • Biofuels
  • Hydropower
  • Ocean
  • Smart Buildings
  • Transportation
  • Efficiency and Conservation
  • The Energy Internet
In addition, 10 eco-essays answer questions and dispel myths about important related subjects, such as finance, climate science and global trade.

Kick will engage, entertain, and educate about one of the most important subjects of our time. The book is designed to appeal to a wide range of readers—with lively text, stunning photographs and thoughtful analysis from a politically neutral technology expert.

Tom Rand acts as Lead Cleantech Advisor at the Toronto-based MaRS Institute, which supports the commercialization of Canadian research development. Before joining MaRS, Tom was a successful entrepreneur, founding Voice Courier Inc. in 1991, a telecommunications software company. It led its expansion to more than 100 employees in three countries. In 2005, he began VCi Green Funds, a private venture fund to provide angel and venture capital to companies developing emission-reducing technologies.
"Now, there's no shortage of books out there about green energy, but there's little that explains it so simply and with the graphics and beautiful pictures that show how it's done and how it can help change our world for the better." — Tyler Hamilton, Senior Energy Reporter and Columnist, The Toronto Star
"If the climate crisis had struck fifty years ago, we would have had no alternatives to fossil fuels. Today, there are many alternatives, and Tom Rand's book, Kick, is a superb introduction." — Gwynne Dyer, Journalist and author of Climate Wars
