Edited by Rudyard Griffiths. Illustrated by Anthony Jenkins. Published by Key Porter Books Ltd., 2008. Description: |
Amusing, surprising, and,
above all, informative, 101 Things Canadians Should Know About Canada
offers a snappy and interesting glimpse into what makes us who we are.
We see ourselves as a polyglot and restless nationa country that is on one hand comfortable with our mishmash sense of ourselves, but also prone to worrying about what binds us together as Canadians. 101 things Canadians Should Know About Canada is the Dominion Institute's playful rebuttal to the notion that we are a nation of contrasts, a country always searching for a consensus as to what Canada "is." Based on the results of a definitive national survey that asked a wide variety of Canadians to name the people, places, events, accomplishments, and symbols that define this country, a ranked list of 101 items was created. In 101 Things, that list is expanded into a series of fascinating one-page essays, written by a number of well-known Canadian writers, actors, and journalists, and complemented by charming illustrations by The Globe and Mail's Anthony Jenkins. Rudyard Griffiths is co-director of the Salon Speakers Series and the Munk Debates. He is also co-founder of the Canadian think-tank The Dominion Institute and writes a regular column on Canadian issues for the National Post. He has edited various books on Canadian history and politics. In 2006,The Globe and Mail recognized him as one of Canada's top 40 Under 40. |
