Aboriginal Peoples, Self-Government, and the Constitution

In this paper, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples considers the possibility that the inherent Aboriginal right of self-government already exists in the Constitution of Canada. It discusses the historical and legal grounds for the right and how it might be implemented. This document examines whether Aboriginal societies functioned under Aboriginal customary law before and after the act of Confederation.

Produced by the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. Published by Canadian Government Publishing, 1993.
