Written by Anna Magnusson. Published by Dundurn Press, 2006. Description: |
| In 1871, Glasgow shoemaker William Quarrier founded an
organization that offered help to the thousands of destitute children in
Glasgow's infamous slums. A few years later, Quarrier's Village was opened,
providing a countryside refuge to the abandoned and the orphaned. From 1872 to 1933, Quarrier sent 7,000 of his young charges out to a new life in Canada. Most of these "Home Children" were placed on Canadian farms as second-class helpers. The Quarriers Story tells their tale. These young Canadians speak of their loneliness, the many challenges they endured, and their ultimate achievements as contributing Canadians. |
