Disasters of Ontario: 75 Stories of Courage and Chaos

Disasters of Ontario recounts many of the province’s worst disasters, both natural and manmade. This book chronicles some of the most devastating events, from shipping and railway tragedies, tornadoes and hurricanes, to epidemics, environmental catastrophes and more. Read the personal stories of Ontario’s darkest days and their human and environmental costs:
  • The weight of ice during the Ice Storm of 1998 felled 1000 hydro pylons and 35,000 hydro poles in Ontario and Québec.
  • In 1979, the derailment of a train carrying deadly chemicals in Mississauga led to the second largest evacuation ever in North American history (after Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana).
  • Most of York (present-day Toronto) was looted and burned by the American army in 1812.
  • The Honeymoon Bridge, which gave tourists a spectacular view of Niagara Falls, collapsed under pressure from ice in 1938.
  • All hands went down with 12 ships during a single storm on the Great Lakes in 1913; 50 more ships were badly damaged.
  • Canada’s first Parliament building burned down in 1916.
  • The deadliest single disaster in Great Lakes shipping occurred when the Noronic burned in Toronto Harbour in 1949, killing 118 people on board.
  • In 1954, Hurricane Hazel caused so much flooding that an entire street of houses was washed away in Toronto.
