Written by Dean Jobb. Published by John Wiley & Sons Canada, Ltd., 2005. Description: |
| One of the darkest events
in Canadian history is replete with the drama of war, politics and human
suffering. It is the story of the forced expulsion of some 10,000 Acadians from
their homes in the Maritimes in 1755 by a tyrannical British colonial governor.
The people, including the enfeebled and ill, newborns and elders, were herded
onto ships and transported south, to be dropped along the eastern seaboard of
the American colonies and points beyond. Many children and elders died on
board. Some eventually made their way to Louisiana. Others tried to make their
way back to Nova Scotia through the American wilderness. Author Dean Jobb has written a dramatic and compelling account of "Le grand dérangement" the event that was immortalized in Longfellows famous poem "Evangeline." Jobb brings a cast of characters to life so vividly that the reader is immediately captured by their stories. The richness of detail is remarkable. The quality of writing is cinematic. As a valuable contribution to the early history of Canada and the United States, The Acadians: A Peoples Story of Exile and Triumph describes the harrowing ordeal that a people endured to set down new roots in the southern U.S. and to begin anew their community in the Maritimes to continue their lineage and become a founding nation. |
