Description:

In 1998, Esther Bryan, a visual artist and proud Canadian, had a brilliant idea. She had read that there was at least one person in Canada from every other country in the world, and she wanted to create a project to celebrate that remarkable diversity. She dreamed of making a massive quilt with hundreds of blocks, each one designed to symbolize one country of the world and made by a person originally from that place. So she set about the monumental task of tracking down someone from each heritage background to be involved. Hundreds of volunteers from across the country stepped up to donate their time and talents.

The “Quilt of Belonging” is the fruit of their labors. It proved to be a massive undertaking — 263 blocks, for a finished quilt that is 3.5 metres (10½ feet) tall and 36 metres (120 feet) long. Every nation of the world is represented, from Albania to Zimbabwe, as well as 70 different First Nations, Métis, and Inuit groups of Canada. On April 1, 2005, the quilt was launched at a gala event at the Canadian Museum of Civilization and will continue to tour Canada and beyond for years to come.

This unique and highly visual book highlights dozens of stunning individual blocks and tells the fascinating stories of the groups they represent. Each block showcases startlingly beautiful and varied craftwork. Some are embroidered, some knitted; others are embellished with beads, butterfly wings, porcupine quills, and myriad other materials.

The Quilt of Belonging provides a unique introduction for young readers, placing the quilt within its larger cultural context. The book also gives kids instructions for making their own quilt of belonging with their families, friends, school group, or team.

Intended for ages 9-14.
