Description:

Ask a great question, spark a great debate. Intelligent and thought-provoking, the passionately argued essays in Great Questions of Canada prove that even within the most heated of debates, a national dialogue may emerge, one formed by an underlying spirit of shared values and common experience:
  • Does history matter?
  • Are we a nation of too many identities?
  • Are we a nation of institutions or ideas?
  • Where have all the heroes gone?
  • Is there life after unity?
  • When Canada speaks, does the world listen?
  • How do we build thriving aboriginal communities in the twenty-first century?
  • Is multiculturalism an asset or a liability in a post-9/11 world?
Answers to these questions are as varied and provocative as the writers who penned them: social commentators Neil Bissoondath, Barry Cooper, Charlotte Gray, Michael Ignatieff, Naomi Klein, and Peter C. Newman; policy makers Allan Gotlieb, Ovide Mercredi, and Bob Rae; scholars Jack Granatstein, Guy Laforest, and Janice Gross Stein. In this new edition, columnists George Jonas and Haroon Siddiqui debate the future of a multicultural society in a post-9/11 world, while political adviser Tom Flanigan and aboriginal rights lawyer (and great-grandniece of Louis Riel) Jean Teillet discuss the controversial issue of Native land claims.

The Great Questions of Canada program is an initiative of The Dominion Institute, a national charity formed in 1997 to promote better understanding of Canadian history and civics. The Dominion Institute is also running an essay competition on the eight questions explored in Great Questions of Canada. The essay competition is open to senior high school students and history and political-science undergraduates aged twenty-one and younger.
